Phoenix, AZ (March 4, 2020) – A Surprise man has been arrested after he allegedly crashed his car into a parked pickup truck, pinning a young man between the vehicles and crushing the victim’s legs. Bogdan Pop, 31, faces one charge of felony aggravated assault.
The incident happened on the evening of Feb. 27, as Pop was driving down a residential street near 51st Avenue and Union Hills Drive in northwest Phoenix. Cars were parked on both sides of the road.
Police say Pop collided with the back of a parked pickup truck. The 19-year-old victim was sitting on the back of the truck, waiting to unload some furniture, with his legs hanging off the back of the tailgate.
The collision pinned the victim between Pop’s car and the pickup. The young man’s legs were crushed. “Fire [crews] had to apply 2 tourniquets to prevent blood loss and potential death of the victim,” according to the police report. “Once at the hospital, the staff there indicated the victim sustained life-threatening injuries due to the severe amount of blood loss.” Hospital staffers say the victim’s right leg was completely crushed and that the left leg sustained a slightly less-severe injury.
According to the victim’s Go Fund Me page, doctors were able to save the victim’s leg from amputation. But his recovery and rehabilitation will likely be a long and difficult process.
Meantime, back at the scene of the crash, police say they observed that the car’s driver, Pop, had “bloodshot, watery eyes” and that they could “smell a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him as he spoke.” Officers also reported noticing other indications of possible impairment. The police report states that Pop’s preliminary breath test showed a blood-alcohol level of .184, which is well above the legal limit of 0.08. Pop was booked into jail with a bond set at $35,000.
Police closed the intersection of 51st Avenue and Union Hills Drive during their investigation.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victim in hopes of a full recovery.
Injurious Car Crashes in Arizona
The latest accident report from the Arizona Department of Transportation showed that the state had more than 130,000 accidents in 2018. Unfortunately, countless injuries resulted from these wrecks. In fact, at least 37,000 of the accidents involved at least two seriously injured victims requiring medical care or hospitalization.
Oftentimes, wreck victims must document their injuries, negotiate with insurance companies, and take time from work. They may even have to deal with lost wages or job loss. But victims and their families can seek help from a personal injury lawyer, especially if they’ve been involved in an accident that’s caused by the negligent actions of another driver.
